Ferro silicon lumps are alloys produced by smelting in electric furnaces using coke, steel scrap, and quartz (or silica sand) as raw materials. Since silicon readily combines with oxygen to form silicon dioxide, ferro silicon is commonly used as a deoxidizer in steel making. Simultaneously, the exothermic reaction of silicon dioxide formation releases significant heat, which helps elevate molten steel temperature during deoxidation. Furthermore, ferro silicon serves as an alloying element additive, widely applied in low-alloy structural steels, spring steels, bearing steels, heat-resistant steels, and electrical silicon steels.

Key Properties of Ferro Silicon Lump
High Silicon Content
Ferro Silicon lumps typically contain a significant amount of silicon, which contributes to their effectiveness in deoxidation and alloying processes.
Low Impurities
They have minimal impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus, ensuring superior performance in steel and iron manufacturing.
Efficient Deoxidation
Ferro Silicon lumps react with oxygen to remove it from molten steel, improving the steel’s quality and properties.
Versatile Particle Sizes
Available in various sizes (e.g., 10-50mm, 50-100mm), making them suitable for diverse applications in foundries and steel mills.
Benefits of Using Ferro Silicon Lumps
Cost-Effectiveness
Their high silicon content allows for efficient deoxidation and alloying, reducing overall material costs.
Improved Steel Quality
By removing oxygen and controlling impurities, Ferro Silicon lumps contribute to producing high-grade steel with superior mechanical properties.
Customizable Sizes
The availability of different lump sizes ensures suitability for various furnace types and applications.
Environmental Benefits
Using Ferro Silicon lumps minimizes waste generation, as they are consumed efficiently during industrial processes.
Reduces the oxygen content of the steel molten.
Reduces the number of oxides in the steel molten.
Improves the form of inclusions in the steel molten.
Make the impurities in the steel molten floating on the surface of the steel easy to clean.
Improves the purity of the steel molten.
Improves the flowability of the molten iron during casting.
Improves the toughness and cutting properties of castings.
Promote the breeding effect in the casting process.
The particle size distribution of ferrosilicon granules plays a crucial role in metallurgical applications, primarily manifested in the following aspects:
Uniform Dispersion and Complete Dissolution
Appropriate particle sizes (e.g., 1–3 mm, 3–8 mm) enable uniform dispersion of ferrosilicon particles in molten iron or steel, preventing localized agglomeration. Uniform particle size facilitates rapid and complete dissolution, allowing silicon to participate more effectively in chemical reactions and enhancing the stability of inoculation or deoxidation effects.
Precise Control of Graphite Precipitation and Spheroidization
Uniformly sized ferrosilicon granules enable more precise promotion of graphite precipitation and spheroidization. Finer sizes (e.g., 1–3 mm) suit thin-walled castings, responding swiftly to molten iron composition changes. Coarser sizes (e.g., 3–8 mm) suit thick-walled castings, extending inoculation duration and reducing spheroidization decay.
Reducing Slag Volume and Impurities, Improving Utilization Rate
Ferrosilicon particles with uniform particle size distribution minimize slag generation and reduce the risk of impurities entering molten iron or steel. Excessive fine powder can cause oxidation losses and increase slag volume, whereas optimal particle size enhances ferrosilicon utilization and lowers production costs.
Extend mold lifespan and enhance casting quality
Uniform particle size facilitates the formation of an even protective layer on mold surfaces, reducing wear and minimizing surface defects like pinholes and gas pores. This extends mold service life while improving casting surface quality and first-pass inspection pass rates.
Adapting to diverse process requirements
Different metallurgical processes demand specific ferrosilicon particle sizes. For instance, continuous casting steel deoxidation requires finer particles for rapid reaction, while ductile iron production necessitates specific particle sizes to ensure effective spheroidization. Selecting an appropriate particle size distribution precisely meets the demands of various processes.
